Teach English in Taiwan

TFETP was launched by the Ministry of Education (MOE) to recruit foreign English teachers and teaching assistants to create more opportunities for Taiwanese students to learn English in schools nationwide.Our MissionTo improve the English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills of Elementary (Grades 3-6) and Junior High students (Grades 7-9) in Taiwan.To develop innovative English curriculum and effective teaching methods through collaboration between foreign English teachers, foreign English teaching assistants, and Taiwanese teachers.To enhance the multicultural competence of foreign English teachers, foreign English teaching assistants, and local residents.

Prior to TFETP, the MOE established the Foreign English Teachers Program (FET Program) in 2004 to assist local governments in recruiting foreign English teachers for public elementary and junior High schools. The FET Program was expanded into the TFETP in 2021 to recruit more teaching talents in order to enhance the English skills of Taiwanese students.

TFETP program is recruiting talented FET & Foreign English Teaching Assistant. The TFETP have two centers which assist in the recruitment and professional development for the foreign English teachers and teaching assistants, and also supervise them after they are assigned to our program’s school. 

The North Center is responsible for Hsinchu City, Hsinchu County, Keelung City, Taipei City, New Taipei City, Taoyuan City , Hsinchu City, Hsinchu County, Yilan County, Miaoli County, Kinmen County, Lienchiang County (Matsu) and Penghu County. 

The South Center is responsible for Taichung City, Changhua County, Nantou County, Chiayi City, Chiayi County, Tainan City, Hualien County, Kaohsiung City, Pingtung County, Yunlin County and Taitung County.

Eligibility

  • Foreign English Teacher
    1. The official or common language of the nation (as the nationality shown on the passport) where the applicant is from must be English. Identification of the official or common language of a nation is issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of China (Taiwan).* If the applicant has dual nationality (ROC Taiwan citizen and other foreign nationality), please use the foreign nationality to apply.The List of Nations with English as the Official or Common Language
    2. Hold a bachelor’s degree or above from an accredited university or college. The list of the accredited universities and colleges is based on the Database for the Reference List of Foreign Universities from the Ministry of Education, Republic of China (Taiwan) website (list).
    3. For the teaching qualification, one should meet one of the following requirements:
      1. Hold a state-issued teaching license or certificate.
      2. Have taught English courses in accredited foreign schools for more than one year, or have served as a full-time teaching assistant of English courses in domestic public schools that participate in MOE’s program for more than one year, and have met one of the following requirements:
        1. Hold a bachelor’s degree or above in education, English or a related field, and have studied English language teaching methods, teaching assessment, introduction to second language learning and trial teaching for more than 120 hours.
        2. Hold a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificate, TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate or CELTA (Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults) certificate approved by accredited universities.
          The courses offered by the university mentioned in item b in granting the certificates shall meet the following requirements:
          1. The course includes English language teaching methods, teaching assessment, introduction to second language learning and trial teaching.
          2. The course lasts at least 120 hours.
          3. Distance learning courses shall not exceed two thirds of the total course hours.
      A. Hold a state-issued teaching license/certificateValid state-issued teaching license/certificateB. Have taught English courses in accredited foreign schools for more than one year
      Or
      Have served as a full-time teaching assistant of English courses in domestic public schools that participate in MOE’s program for more than one yearApplicants meeting requirement B, should provide one of the documents below:
      a. Bachelor’s degree certificate or above in education, English, or a related field and have taken particular teaching courses
      b. TESOL/TEFL/CELTA certificate approved by accredited universities
    4. Applicants should provide a nationwide police check/clearance from competent authorities in their home country or the country they currently reside in, with the issuance date within six months prior to their application date for TFETP.
      One should assure the validity of the criminal record/police check during the application process. The certificate must include the name of the applicant, the date of issuance, and state that the applicant has no criminal record.
  • Foreign English Teaching Assistant
    1. The official or common language of the nation (as the nationality shown on the passport) where the applicant is from must be English. Identification of the official or common language of a nation is issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of China (Taiwan).* If the applicant has dual nationality (ROC Taiwan citizen and other foreign nationality), please use the foreign nationality to apply.The List of Nations with English as the Official or Common Language
    2. Hold a bachelor’s degree or above from an accredited university or college.
    3. Applicants should provide a nationwide police check/clearance from competent authorities in their home country or the country they currently reside in, with the issuance date within six months prior to their application date for TFETP.
      One should assure the validity of the criminal record/police check during the application process. The certificate must include the name of the applicant, the date of issuance, and state that the applicant has no criminal record.

Note: Applicants without prior teaching experiences in either Taiwan or other countries are highly advised (but not required) to provide education or teaching qualifications that are either certified by Republic of China (Taiwan) Embassies and Missions or verified by a recognized credential evaluation agency[1].
